Mexico: Tamaulipas exports 100 000 tons of citrus per year
Tamaulipas exports annually about one hundred thousand tons of citrus to the United States, which represents 20 percent of the 500 000 tons produced, while the remaining percentage is sold in the domestic market.
The fact that there can´t be a bigger export to the neighboring country is derived from health issues imposed by the U.S, said.Luis Lauro Soto Carrillo, President of the Regional Union of Citrus.
Nowadays, he recognizes that citrus producers lack the resources and the support that makes them unable to sort out the imposed sanitary measures to export the product that is harvested.
The lack of resources concerns producers who see with dissatisfaction the fact that there is no way to increase exports in order to try to open to more international markets. The U.S has phytosanitary restrictions and severe safety levels that prevent the access of citrus from Tamaulipas, although federal and state governments have made efforts to fulfill the requirements demanded by the international standards. Nevertheless, progress is slow mainly because they require too much investment.
