Clarke concerned about viability of citrus industry
The Opposition is raising fresh concerns about the state of the country's citrus industry.
Spokesman on Agriculture, Roger Clarke has urged the government to immediately intervene in the citrus industry to avert a looming crisis which threatens its viability.
The opposition claims that from all indications, the government's rescue plan for the sector has floundered.
According to Mr. Clarke, local citrus farmers are owed in excess of $30 million from last year crop and this year's citrus crop, which is ready to be reaped, is in jeopardy as no arrangements or provisions have been made to pay farmers for their produce.
"Things have gotten worse this year as farmers are unable to reap their crop because the company doesn't have any resources to enable them to deliver their citrus," he said.
Mr. Clarke added that there is currently $80 million worth of local citrus concentrate stock which cannot be sold while similar concentrate is allowed into the country.
